How AI Is Learning to Read Ancient Lankan Inscriptions

Inside Project Deep Script — A New Chapter in the History of History

“Before we translate, we must first listen — not to stories, not to scholars, but to the stone itself.”

📜 A New Kind of Mission

Welcome to Project Deep Script, one of the first experiments in the world where Artificial Intelligence is learning to read ancient languages from scratch — specifically the sacred scripts of Lanka:

  • Brahmi
  • Magadhi
  • Ancient Sinhala
  • And the original Pali Canon (Tripitaka)

This isn’t just translation.
This is reconstruction. Decoding. Listening.
With zero influence from modern English or Sinhala meanings.

🧪 Why We’re Doing This

Because most of what we call “translation” today is actually interpretation — passed down through religious, colonial, or academic filters.

But we believe:

  • The truth of the Buddha’s teachings may still be visible
  • The real voice of ancient Lanka is still carved in stone
  • And AI can learn to read it — without bias

This is a purely experimental, open-source, truth-seeking project.

🧠 How AI Learns the Script — Step by Step

Let’s break it down.

1️⃣ Letter to Sound

We first teach AI the base script:
𑀅 = අ = a
𑀓 = ක = ka
𑀧 = ප = pa

It learns each letter’s shape, sound, and how it evolved from Brahmi to Sinhala.

2️⃣ Pattern Recognition

AI is fed hundreds of real inscriptions and palm-leaf texts.
It finds patterns: repeating names, blessings, numbers, verbs.
It learns how words are formed without being told what they mean.

3️⃣ Cross-Language Comparison

We compare:

  • Ancient Brahmi & Pali
  • Later Sinhala script
  • Tripitaka word usage
  • And how terms show up in stone

This helps AI trace how one word moved and evolved, across centuries.

4️⃣ Meaning Through Structure

Once AI sees how a word is shaped, used, and repeated — it suggests a meaning, not by guessing, but by rebuilding its root.

Example:
𑀦𑁆𑀧 = න්ප = npa → Seen in offerings: nama + pāna → “respectful offering”

5️⃣ AI Feedback & Corrections

As you (human researcher) read and correct the AI’s results, the system improves.
The more inscriptions and texts we run through, the more accurate it gets.

📂 What We’ve Done So Far

✅ Created the full Brahmi > Sinhala > AI Sound Table
✅ Started decoding real inscriptions from:

  • Bambaragala
  • Mihintale
  • Isurumuniya

✅ AI is also beginning to read:

  • Tripitaka (Pali) from raw word roots
  • Mahavansa in direct context

🙏 How You Can Help

This is not one man’s mission — it’s a digital expedition for Lanka.

You can:

  • Share photos of old cave or rock inscriptions
  • Sponsor a chapter or section to decode
  • Help train AI models or review results
  • Spread the word about BOLD Projects

“We are not rewriting history.
We are re-reading it — one character at a time.”

Welcome to Project Deep Script.
Let’s listen to what the stones are finally ready to say.
